Welcome to the Harts Bluff art webpage. Art is part of the "enrichment" team rotation classes for grades 1-6. Students in grades 7-8 can choose art as an elective class.

Art students learn about art elements, art principles, art media and techniques, artists, and art history. Our projects provide opportunities for both creativity and critical thinking. The students in all grades have opportunities to use their iPads or Chromebooks to support our projects.

Last school year was a great success. Our students won contests, competed in UIL, and had a great art show on campus. We continued our journey through time by continuing a focus on art history. From first grade to eighth grade, students learned that mankind has always used art to record events, beliefs, and feelings. Each time travel stop was introduced with an intriguing video presentation and then we tried our hand at creating time period art. We began in the Medieval period, then investigated the Renaissance, continued with the dramatic art of the Baroque period, and finished with the popular French Impressionists. The students were provided experiences with landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and genre art, all in various media. I was especially proud of the junior high students’ collaboration on a Dale Chihuly inspired, recycled water bottle chandelier. With close to 500 water bottles, this colorful sculpture can now be seen in our school’s office foyer. 

During the 2019-2020 school year, art students will end the art history themed study with art of the 20^th century to the present. They will learn that artists became rebels and experimented with dozens of styles. We will have lots of fun imitating and experimenting with styles like Post Impressionism, Expressionism, Fauvism, Dada, Pop Art, Op Art, Assemblages, and Installations. I’m looking forward to a great year with lots of creative fun.

A note to parents:  junior high students receive a single grade for participation. Students are graded on their work ethic, attitude, and completion of a minimum amount of work. The students are not graded on their ability. I want to encourage each student to explore his or her creativity without feeling competitive or inadequate. Art is an individual expression of self. I hope each student can simply enjoy art.
